A Narrative Inquiry about the Relationship Formation and Adaptation Process of Group Home Youth With Surrogate Caregivers

Abstract
This study explored the meaning of experience on group home youth¡¯s relationship formation with surrogate caregivers and the process of their group home adaptation. Participants were four adolescents aged 15 to 18 years old who lived in group home for more than 5 years. The conducted in-depth interviews was recorded, transcribed and analyzed by the researchers using narrative inquiry method proposed by Clandinin and Connelly. The results of this study showed participants experienced the interest and care from surrogate caregivers and their sociality improved through sibling relationships in group home. However, the depth of acceptance and the level of showing their hearts toward the surrogate caregivers varied depending on the size and shape of their pain and wounds. Based on the results, the meaning, personal justification, practical justification, and social justification of the group home youth's experience of forming relationships with a surrogate caregivers. The implications and further studies were suggested.
